JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - "Bird Set Free" diluncurkan sebagai singel promosi pertama dari album studio ketujuh Sia yang bertajuk This Is Acting (2016).
Saat diwawancarai Rolling Stone, Sia membeberkan fakta bahwa awalnya lagu ini akan digunakan untuk film Pitch Perfect 2 (2015), namun batal karena diganti dengan lagu "Flashlight" yang dibawakan Jessie J.
Ia kemudian menawarkannya pada diva pop Rihanna dan Adele, namun keduanya menolak sehingga Sia memutuskan untuk menyanyikannya sendiri.
