Melansir dari Dazed, Grimes mengungkap ia berusaha menulis lagu pop dalam "Vanessa" namun hal tersebut justru menjadikan lagu ini seperti 'kosong' baginya.b
Grimes bahkan mengatakan ia membenci lagu ini.
